The bathroom door opened. “I’m ready,” Alese said, and Emily and Harold went to her sides. “Do we still have crutches in the basement?”

“I’m not sure. I’ll check as soon as I walk Harold home and stay until he’s settled.” Emily helped Alese sit on the side of the bed.

“I’ll step out for a minute while you women do what you need to do.”

Harold closed the door. They heard him move away. “I can’t believe the changes in him. Is Max an angel?” Alese asked.

“A long-haired, bearded, tattooed one. He isn’t what you’d expect, is he?”

“A male nurse. I can see him on an oil rig or working on a high scaffold shouldering steel beams for a new building,” Alese said. “We owe Rae a debt of gratitude.”

“We sure do.” She lifted her mother’s legs over the edge of the bed. “I’ll check on those crutches.”

“Look after Harold and then get some sleep. I’m afraid there isn’t rain in the forecast for tomorrow, I checked the radar on my phone just before dinner.”

“We’ll make do, as a very smart partner has told me. Someone will help me fill the cart.”

“It would help if someone refilled the semi and you could stay in the field.”

“We’ll be fine, Mom. I’ll help Harold to bed. He’s made such an improvement, I wouldn’t want lack of sleep to have him return to that night Max arrived.”

“You’re a good woman, Emily Lange.”

“I have a whole family to thank for that. I only hope I am worthy to continue on with this tradition.”

“That’s for another day, tonight is one hour at a time.”
